Coding to the Top

A Peacemaking Project by Anila B.

What is the injustice we are solving?

Our organization is MESSAGE (Mathematics Engineering Science Studies Accelerate Girls' Empowerment). Girls and women are significantly underrepresented in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) professions worldwide, a divide rooted in girls’ earliest days of socialization and schooling and one that MESSAGE aims to address. OC Coding, which in itself increases civic engagement because it is youth-run, offers free coding classes. However, they do not pay for insurance; the site of coding has to take care of that. That will be $300 for our school to hold it, and the $250 grant will go a long way towards taking care of that.

Hi Anila,

We wanted to let you know that we are extending the deadline for active projects to apply for a Mini-Grant during this Peace First Challenge to April 15th. You can apply for a mini-grant anytime, but meeting the Challenge deadlines will make you eligible for additional opportunities.

If you do not require a mini-grant to complete your project, you can remain eligible for the Accelerator by completing your project and Reflection before the May 31st deadline! If you submit your project plan by April 15th, we'll be sure to provide you with feedback by April 21st to support you with carrying out the plan.

If you are still in early stages of planning, you are also welcome to apply for a mini-grant at a later date -- although you may not be eligible for an Accelerator, the opportunity for funding and support is always there.

Please let me know if you have any questions, and if we can help in any way!

Hi Anila,

Just checking in about your project and the next steps. I wanted to make sure you are aware of the upcoming Mini-Grant Deadline - there is still time to remain eligible to attend a Peace First Challenge Accelerator if you complete your Compassionate Insight, Project Plan, and Mini-Grant application by March 31st.

We're excited about your work, and would love to be able to support it with a mini-grant of up to $250.

These tools can help you craft your insight, plan, and budget for your mini-grant:

Through your dashboard you can submit your "compassionate insight," record your plan in "Make a plan" and then "Apply for a mini-grant" for the materials you need.

Let me know how I can help!

Your project sounds amazing! I believe that you can really make a difference and empower more girls to solve problems. Do you know what topics you want to start teaching?
Looking at existing curriculum for workshops can be helpful. The Techgirlz foundation has some great free plans on a variety of topics:
The Project CSGirls organization also has workshop curriculum plans, and I am sure they would be happy to provide more guidance.

I hope your project goes well!

Such an important cause! Will you be connecting with local professionals- ie.) Web Developers, Software Developers, etc... We reached out via twitter and although the project took a different turn, there many professionals that were willing to help-

Not sure where you are located, but Girls Who Code is an established organization. They may be able to give you advice on how to get started and/or offer a place for you to visit/work.

Hey folks, your project sounds awesome! I think it's important -- and powerful -- that you acknowledge the ways in which the STEM gender gap is a result of persistent sexism.

MESSAGE sounds awesome. Tell me more! Is it based at your school? Who's running it? And what comes next -- getting the license to host free coding classes? Excited to figure out how we can help you.

This is awesome! I think this is a great way to bring coding to girls. Could you give us more information about how your program works/ how the events are run? I'd love to assist you with your project goals!
