Cultural Acknowledgment

A Peacemaking Project by mariyem t.

What is the injustice we are solving?

At my school they really like to emphasize on how diverse it is and use it to better their reputation. Yet they don’t bother to go further and really acknowledge the different cultures and backgrounds present within our school.

Our Compassionate Solution:

To solve this injustice of lack of acknowledgement of different cultures and identity appreciation
we will address that everyone has a history and that it matters
by allowing people to share their cultures and family rituals through a culture night.

Our Project Plan:

  • i want to make a culture night where a lot of different cultures can come together and everyone can learn about each other.
  • a lot of different cultural foods
  • stations maybe fun facts
  • guess the flag games +facts
  • performances
  • talk to the deans about what to do to make it happen

We will increase my / our compassion by...

learning wheee different people come from and their backgrounds.

How will you show courage?

By not only listening but also sharing my story.

How will you collaborate with others?

i will gather many people from many different backgrounds to share their stories and what makes them. Themselves.

How will you know you are moving in the right direction? (What are specific ways you can measure your impact?)

By creating a list and checking off all the things i need to complete in an organized manner.

Key Steps

  • Talk to deans
  • Create a group
  • Find students who are willing to participate
  • Set a date
  • Make an agenda
  • Get the funding

How did the project deepen your team's understanding of the injustice?

This project really showed me the importance of acknowledging different cultures and where everyone comes from.

How did your community change as a result of your project?

More people in my community now feel a sense of actual community because there’s this new comfortability and support system in a way.

How many people were impacted by your project?

Explain how you came up with the number of people impacted by the project?

it’s a rough estimate of all the people who came.

How did your team learn more about the people affected by the injustice?

Because we really got to learn more about people who aren’t even quite outspoken.

What did your team learn?

That we have the power to make change in our school.

What challenges did your team overcome?

Having to really lead this whole thing on our own.

How have you involved others in designing, carrying out, or expanding this project?

Hopefully we want to make it a yearly thing.

What advice would you give to someone starting a peacemaking project?

Don’t give up
