Donate a Duck

A Peacemaking Project by Pooja S.

What is the injustice we are solving?

There are many refugee children in the Netherlands who have a language deficiency. We think it's important for them to properly learn the Dutch language. Refugee families don't have any savings and they start their future in their new country in poverty. So these families don't have the means to buy books for their children. Why do they need books? Books are an efficient way to learn a language. By reading fifteen minutes a day you'll read approximately 1.2 million words a year. So our idea is to donate comics to young refugee children. We'd like to set up a campaign to collect comics like Donald Duck.

Our Compassionate Solution:

To solve this injustice of language barrier of refugees
we will address refugees who have a hard time learning the dutch language which creates a barrier in integrating
by collecting donald ducks and other comics to give to the refugee children, these comics might help them learning the dutch language

Our Updates:

compassionate insight

Pooja S. 23 February 2018 9:03 To solve the injustice of language barriers that refugees face when they move to a new country (in this case The Netherlands). We'll adress the problem that refugees have by collecting Donald Ducks and other comics which might help these refugees to develop their language so integrating will become easier for them.

Goedemorgen, Pooja!
Thanks again so much for posting this project.
As part of the Peace First project-making process, we give formal feedback on your compassionate insight. Once your insight is all set, then you can move forward with your mini-grant application if you need funds to help move your idea into action!
I love the fact that you are looking for a fun way to support children from refugee families learn Dutch and help them with their adaptation process which can be very difficult. I lived in Amsterdam for a few months and I can understand how difficult that process of adaptation can be. One thing that could help make your project stronger is identifying a little bit better what the injustice that you want to work on is. You mentioned that your identified injustice is "language barrier of refugees" which is a great start but I invite you think about what is the reason behind that language barrier. Is there for example a lack of support for children to be better supported in this process of resettlement?
Your project is really strong and interesting and I think it can really help create bigger awareness around this issue.
Let us know if we can help in any way!

Welcome to Peace First community, Pooja! This is a very interesting idea! Language is one of the barriers that would prevent any person from integrating into the new community. Do you have a team to help in implementing the project? Please let us know how can we help.
