The Leaders Symposium
A Peacemaking Project by Shayne T.
What is the injustice we are solving?
I believe that there is a direct link between civic disengagement and low aspirations , young people in society who feel far removed from the socio-economic and political landscape are at a disadvantage. The many who are not fortunate enough to have access to role models and key public figures may not have the confidence to achieve their fullest potential in a competitive commoditised economic climate. I have been fortunate to work with organisations that have made it possible for me to meet influential figures such as politicians and business leaders. I want to go into communities across the UK and create spaces for young people to meet & engage with community leaders to raise their aspirations and create solid networks between current leaders and millions of future leaders
Our Compassionate Solution:
To solve this injustice of I want to solve the injustice of the attainment gap where young people and students from disadvantaged backgrounds have lower aspirations and prospects due to lack of contacts , role models and access to leaders .
we will address The root cause of this injustice is the socio-economic landscape that is built for the better off but leaves a whole generation of disadvantaged young people behind. There are few practical proven steps to improve social mobility and this is a huge issue
by By going into communities all over the country and connecting community leaders in business , politics and 3rd sector with a diverse group of young people and bringing leaders together with future leaders to give every young person a better chance
Our Project Plan:
- To create a space for young people to meet and interact with leaders in the economic, political and community landscape
- To facilitate civic engagement
- To promote social mobility
- To bring Leaders and future leaders together
We will increase my / our compassion by...
Raising awareness and attention to the fact that there are young people that have been left behind and use the Leaders Symposium to illustrate that young people like myself can create solutions to such issues if given the support .
How will you show courage?
This is a bold undertaking as it will involve collaboration from young people with leaders in business , politics and the economy . The project will show courage in that it will show that young people can reach out to leaders and bring them into their space to facilitate and create connections for the future
How will you collaborate with others?
I will enlist the help of university societies such as the Debate society . I will involve the student union executive and I will involve national organisations such as UK youth and Youth Employment UK.
How will you know you are moving in the right direction? (What are specific ways you can measure your impact?)
I will seek feedback every step of the way from the young people I will be working with and from the peace first facilitators. After the project is delivered I will access the outcome of the event and measure the engagement and impact of the undertaking

How did the project deepen your team's understanding of the injustice?
My project helped me to understand that the wider goal is to extend economic inclusion. It helped me understand that the lack of access and social capital can be solved by reaching out to marginalised communities and building capacity therein.
How did your community change as a result of your project?
The Town and University of Buckingham has since had a wide range of leaders visiting the local area and connecting with young people creating a kind of accelerator effect on the local economy through building of social capital
How many people were impacted by your project?
Explain how you came up with the number of people impacted by the project?
I Counted the number of attendees on Eventbrite including the speakers myself and special guests. This ofcourse excludes the media coverage impressions.
How did your team learn more about the people affected by the injustice?
The team learned empathy and gained insights into the disadvantage that other young people face in the education to employment pipeline
What did your team learn?
My team learnt to collaborate better across lines of difference. They learnt to take one the initiative and how to develop and deliver socail innovation and impact.
What challenges did your team overcome?
The team had to overcome budget constraints, disagreements with scheduling and different visions for the event and process.
How have you involved others in designing, carrying out, or expanding this project?
I sought feedback on how the event went and how it can be improved
What advice would you give to someone starting a peacemaking project?
To just take the first step, to take the initiative and see how it goes. There is less to lose than there is to gain, and young people can become the change they want to see in the world.
