Safer School Communities

A Peacemaking Project by Julia D.

What is the injustice we are solving?

My project is in direct reaction to the inspiring students of Stoneman Douglas High School's fight for stricter gun laws after the mass shooting that took the lives of 17 of their classmates and teachers on Valentines Day. The goal of my project is to bring stronger awareness of violence in our country to the people of my community. I want to work and help people understand that this is something that could easily happen in our own backyard. My project targets the children and teens of the City of Boston. I want to organize a program that brings students from schools all across the city and the state to demand stricter gun laws as well as resources that will ensure student safety in the unfortunate event of a mass shooting. I want to bring my community together to enforce a change in our local government like the Stoneman Douglas students are doing in theirs. They decided to take action after something happens which has inspired me to take action BEFORE something happens. We need to be the change in our community and our world because one day it will all be ours. If the adults are not willing to make a change then we will do it ourselves, and that is the mission of my program, to protect our future.

Hi Julia!

Thanks so much for posting your project. We have had lots of very courageous young people like you posting projects recently to try and address injustices related to gun violence. I am inspired that you want to take action in that area.

One thing that can help deepen the already-important work you're doing is to talk to people who directly experience the effects of gun violence, to the groups that cause gun violence to happen, and to other people who are working to stop gun vilolence. When you talk to all these groups, you'll gain a deeper understanding of why this is happening, and you'll get to learn from people who are directly affected by this to understand what their priorities and needs are. Understanding the root causes of gun violence will help you address it at the root. Here’s a toolkit we have for helping with this process:

There are also other groups working on similar issues here on the website that you may want to connect with or encourage:

I hope that these resources are useful! Thank you for what you're doing!

Let me know if you have any questions or need support in thinking about your next steps. :) I'm excited to support you however possible, and to watch this project grow!
