when will the homeless be acknowledged?

Homelessness has continued to grow in increasing rates in the city of chicago and there are so many distressed properties in which can be turned into facilities for the men, woman and children who are left out in the cold. Homelessness has increased due to inflation and politics looking for quick fixes. Homeowners and low-income families are being forced to the streets because they can not afford the high rent and increasing taxes. Society need to be accountable for these individuals out in the streets they are human being and they have rights too.

Belinda, that's a great question. I think you laid bare a lot of the significant problems feeding into the homelessness epidemic, especially the issue of affordable housing.

In my mind, homelessness will only be acknowledged when people speak out and take action. People will ignore issues like homelessness -- ones that are painful to discuss and difficult to solve -- if they have no reason not to. It's up to us to start a conversation so that they are forced to confront the issue and do the right thing. In the spirit of MLK Day, one of my favorite quotes by Dr. King is this one: "Nonviolent direct action seeks to create such a crisis and foster such a tension that a community which has constantly refused to negotiate is forced to confront the issue. It seeks so to dramatize the issue that it can no longer be ignored."

So in that spirit -- I hope you'll start a project to raise awareness of homelessness so that it can no longer be ignored!
