Healthcare is both a basic human right and a key influencer of economic and social development. Good health can have a positive impact on people’s life chances and opportunities, while poor health can undermine economic and social development. Differences in health outcomes are often linked to factors that tend to be community-specific, such as socioeconomic status, race, housing, access to clinical services, availability of transportation and scope of employment opportunities. We all deserve to live healthy lives; when someone’s wellness is compromised because of factors outside of their control, you’ve identified an injustice.

What can you do as a peacemaker? Do research to form your own opinion about what’s fair in healthcare and where things need to be improved. Talk to nurses, physicians and members of your community and ask what are challenges they experience. Then work with friends to test out a solution that will help even one aspect of healthcare. Small steps can add up to big changes.
