Compartamos la Mesa
A Peacemaking Project by Nicole A.
What is the injustice we are solving?
In Costa Rica about five thousand tons of food are being wasted yearly; that of which could meet the nutritional needs of 220 thousand individuals. According to the Household Survey of the National Institute for Statistics and Census, 317 thousand households live in poverty (21.7%) and 90 thousand households do not eat 3 times a day. In Costa Rica, just as in most countries in Central America, the lack of food donations along with the excess of food waste are triggered by the county's federal code of laws. Companies, along with supermarkets, catering services and hotels, fear being sued for liability over the donated food. Therefore alliances between organizations dedicated to food distribution and food donors are rare.
Our Compassionate Solution:
To solve this injustice of Hunger by tackling Food Waste issues
we will address The legal grounds of food donation and liability over the donated products.
by Drafting and presenting a bill to congress that seeks to create a feasible rout for the distribution of all perishable food through the division of responsibility within the main pillars of the donation chain: Benefactors, Collectors and beneficiaries.

As part of the process of completing peacemaking projects, Peace First staff give formal feedback on important steps of the project. One of those steps is the compassionate insight.
It would be great to try to be specific about the injustice that you are trying to solve. Hunger is a big concept and one particular issue that you could focus on, which you have already shared, the food waste!
I would encourage you to make your insight as clear as you can, so that other Peace First members would understand it better! You can use the compassionate tool here: https://www.peacefirst.org/resource/understand-4-compassionate-insight, which will help you in re-writing your compassionate insight.
We would also encourage everyone who is at this stage of their project to work towards deepening their understanding of the injustice they're focusing on. Thus, It would be great to talk to other people in your community and try to understand their perspective this issue or other people who are trying to solve the same justice or/and people who are already working to solve this injustice. Also, make sure to use the problem and solution tree to discover the root causes and consequences of your chosen injustice and it will guide you to more solutions. Here are some resources on how to do that: https://www.peacefirst.org/understand-through-compassion
You would need to get started now so you can apply for a mini-grant. Thanks again for sharing your project with Peace First members, and we are looking forward to your next steps of the project!
Please let us know if you need any help with this!
