Project SMILE

A Peacemaking Project by Rishav D.

What is the injustice we are solving?

According to the Annual Report (2012/13), 3,92,831 people in Nepal have suffered from dental caries/toothache, 73,309 have suffered from periodontal infections (gum), 62,747 have suffered from teeth disorders and 1,13,819 have oral ulcer, mucosa and other dental problems. Based on the survey completed by Nepal national pathfinder (2016) it was known that, about 60% of dental problems were faced by people living in rural districts of Terai region of Nepal. The main reason behind this was found to be the lack of awareness and knowledge on oral health and hygiene among the marginalized groups living there. Consumption of cigarettes, pipes, cigars and tobacco containing products from small age, 8 years old generally, was another reason behind oral problems. Also, lack of proper health services, unwillingness of dentists to visit rural sites increases the possibility of occurrence of such dental problems. Kanchanrup is one of the vulnerable places of Saptari district (in the Southern plains), where people are highly unaware about dental problems. Bad habits of consuming tobacco containing products from small age have led towards occurrence of gum problems and tooth decay. During a Focused Group Discussion among 15 children at Kanchanrup, ‘We’ found that none of the children had a habit of brushing their teeth. In addition they did not even know the technique of brushing their teeth. So, with the motive to aware these vulnerable group of children regarding the healthy oral hygiene habits, ‘We’ for Change aims to initiate 2-days awareness classes among 200 community children of Kanchanrup, Saptari to increase their knowledge on oral hygiene and establish proper brushing habit among them.

Our Compassionate Solution:

To solve this injustice of exposure of children of Kanchanrup village of Saptari district to severe oral health problems/oral disease such as decaying of teeth, sore throat, gum problems along with oral cancer in long term due to consumption of tobacco containing products such as bidi, cigars etc.
we will address Lack of knowledge on oral health and hygiene, harmful health effects on consumption of tobacco and toxic substances containing products and importance of brushing the teeth along with proper techniques of brushing among children of age group 7 to 15 years old
by Organizing two days awareness campaign which will include awareness classes, drama, storytelling session, video session and distributing animated awareness pamphlets in Kanchanrup village involving 200 children from age group 7 to 15 years old to aware them about importance of maintaining oral health and hygiene, harmful health effects on consumption of tobacco and toxic substances containing products and importance of brushing the teeth along with proper brushing techniques by October 2019.

Our Project Plan:

  • We will organize two days awareness campaign among 200 community children of Kanchanrup, Saptari to increase their knowledge on oral hygiene and establish proper brushing habit among them through awareness classes, drama, storytelling session, video session and distributing animated awareness pamphlets by the end of October 2019.

We will increase my / our compassion by...

Trying to recognize the condition of oral hygiene and dental problems among the children of Kanchanrup, Saptari. Trying to understand the constraint of government approach to address the issue of oral disease in the core areas of Saptari district.

How will you show courage?

By taking an initiation to establish healthy oral habits among 200 children of Kanchanrup community and organize consultation conversation with their parents through 2 days awareness campaign at Kanchanrup, Saptari.

How will you collaborate with others?

We will be collaborating with Kanchanrup Municipality, Shree Bhrikuti Madhyamik Bidhyalaya, Kanchanrup and Dental Care Hospital, Kathmandu throughout the preparation and implementation phase of the project. Also, members from 'We' for Change will also take part as the project team for its implementation.

How will you know you are moving in the right direction? (What are specific ways you can measure your impact?)

We will know we are moving in the right direction by analyzing: a) Evaluating the number of attendees of events. b) Support and Feedback from the team of Kanchanrup municipality. c) Response from Shree Bhrikuti Madhyamik Bidhyalaya school administration. d) Tracking the ability of students to learn the proper ways of brushing their teeth and maintain oral hygiene. e) Feedback from the moderators from Dental Care Hospital, Kathmandu.

Key Steps

  • 1. Meeting with the local level body of Saptari i.e. with the team of Kanchanrup Municipality for their support throughout the project. 2. Meeting with Shree Bhrikuti Madhyamik Bidhyalaya for identification of location for the project implementation. 3. Meeting with the experts of Dental Care Hospital, Kathmandu for allocating the moderators for the implementation of project. 4. Resource allocation and management. 5. Conduction of 2 days awareness campaign at Kanchanrup, Saptari. 6. Post-project evaluation.

How did the project deepen your team's understanding of the injustice?

Terai is vulnerable area for oral diseases victims because most of peoples use tobacco products. As, we are resident of terai we believe that oral hygiene Awareness is necessity of this area to protect Future generation from being prey of harmful oral diseases . We saw lot of children teeth and concluded that they have resources however, they don't have proper idea of brushing teeth .

How did your community change as a result of your project?

At first, before fixing the date of events we had interviews with several people's and we had discussed lot about oral hygiene .Mostly, people were very excited about our project because oral hygiene Awareness program was never conducted over there. At the day of event we saw actually Change in Students ,teachers and parents knowledge as when doctor ask with them about method of brushing teeth they said just opposite method and then we divided poeples in to groups after that doctor show them practical method of brushing teeth by dental equipment(dummy teeth) and brush. Students were following the doctors method and repating it. At that particular moment we feel the change in the students.

How many people were impacted by your project?

Explain how you came up with the number of people impacted by the project?

We had provided local meals for students, teachers, parents approximately 370+ peoples had eaten the meals. Almost all everybody took part in counselling session with doctors (practical session) due which we believe that they were impacted by oral hygiene Awareness program

How did your team learn more about the people affected by the injustice?

our team learn more about this injustice by interviewing peoples .

What did your team learn?

Firstly, we learn how write ,research, our team learn more about the peoples affected by oral health problems having interviews with several peoples living in this area and observing the alarming situation of dental diseases. collaborate and deal with peoples. Mainly, we learn how to organize the events and make it successful and how tackle the difficult situation with calmness.

What challenges did your team overcome?

The day of event was quiet challenging because we have to arrange everyone feasible time and make sure about each an every details need to make event successful. That day weather was rainy and the day before we had done almost all preparation of events .we keep the tent, chairs ,decorate the stage everything was fine however , due to rain everything seems to be ruined and we have to shift to the hall and our chief guest has arrived.I was completely blank after few moments of rain weather seems to be clear and sunny .Finally I thanked the God for saving our prestige and after few moment we have conducted our program as planned.

How have you involved others in designing, carrying out, or expanding this project?

As,we all know that to make any project successful there is contribution of lots of peoples. I have involve my friend Bishnu Das who information technology (IT) student for designing all pamphlets ,banners,Token of love ,Token of appreciation as well as suggestion regarding decoration .

What advice would you give to someone starting a peacemaking project?

I would like to advice starting peacemaker that we have considered every thing with perspective of empathy so that we could know pros and cons of that specific thing.we have to analyse things with very practical aspects .Most important thing is to take responsibility of each single work.
