Diversity in teacher

A Peacemaking Project by Aron K.

What is the injustice we are solving?

Diversity in teachers

Our Compassionate Solution:

To solve this injustice of Diversity in teachers
we will address student input that they can not relate to any of their teacher
by creating a Black Student Union and bringing guest speaker that are people of color

Our Project Plan:

Goals

  • Safe Place for African American Students

We will increase my / our compassion by...

Creating a BSA which will allow African American students to be comfortable being themselves

How will you show courage?

I will show courage by taking a leadership possession and working all members in this organization.

How will you collaborate with others?

I will make announcements at morning meeting and create a board so that it is not dictated.

How will you know you are moving in the right direction? (What are specific ways you can measure your impact?)

If the DSST BSA is publicly recognized for something we have done together.

Key Steps

  • Ask Administration for BSA, Rally up Students, Create Board, Form BSA

Reflection:

How did the project deepen your team's understanding of the injustice?

This project deepened my team's understanding on the injustice by bringing a group of African American students together and helping them getting their voices heard and motivate one another.

How did your community change as a result of your project?

I feel through this BSA the African American population at my school has gotten a lot closer.

How many people were impacted by your project?

175

Explain how you came up with the number of people impacted by the project?

I came up with 175 because there are about 125 African American students at my school and 100 people from this population would attend meetings and such and enjoyed Alliance. And the leftover 75 students came from students of other minority groups that began a Latino Student Alliance and an Asian Cultural Union because of our stance on this injustice.

How did your team learn more about the people affected by the injustice?

My team learned more about the people affected by the injustice by having a open discussions and planned discussions once a week.

What did your team learn?

My team came up with ways to address racism, how to code switch in order to fit in with different crowds, and that you do get judged based on how you dress.

What challenges did your team overcome?

When we first started everyone was extremely rowdy and it was very hard to have genuine conversations.

How have you involved others in designing, carrying out, or expanding this project?

I have involved others in carrying out and expanding this project by creating a leadership team that helps create the planned discussions, looks over our work, and helps expands this project.

What advice would you give to someone starting a peacemaking project?

I would say that this is the most supportive leadership program I have participated in. Writing down my plans and steps helped a lot. Also, this is the first time adults have told me to stand against an injustice and actually funded it for me. All in all, Peace First is extremely helpful.

Dear Aron, you need to celebrate your achievements. As you stated every project has a beginning and an end.

Some projects need a bold move like you did at the beginning. Sometimes it is hard until someone or somebody share your feeling and thoughts. But as you experienced when you walk the talk fellows start join you and to some extent surprise you by taking the lead.

I hope you learn a lot from your accomplished project.

Good Job.

Abeselom Samson is my name I am Peace first digital mentor.
