Gatundu Safe Space

A Peacemaking Project by Esther N. and .

What is the injustice we are solving?

Adolescent girls lack of education and their early marriages

Our Compassionate Solution:

To solve this injustice of Lack of menstruation knowledge and education in adolescent girls.
we will address Lack of menstruation knowledge, sexual and health reproductive knowledge; lack of sanitation protection and towels which affects girls.
by Providing education in menstruation, sexual and health reproductive; providing reusable sanitary towels to 200 girls in Gatundu. The education will take place every Saturday from 10a.m -12p.m. for 8 Saturdays.

Our Project Plan:

  • Ensure all girls attain quality education.
  • Ensure girls have freedom of choice in regards to when & who to marry in their lives.
  • Ensure every girl in Gatundu has access to proper sanitation protection and towels.

We will increase my / our compassion by...

Educating girls in matters concerning menstruation, sexual and reproductive health, enlighten the girls on their rights and offer guidance on where/how to seek legal assistance. Also, we will be providing reusable sanitary towels.

How will you show courage?

We have identified some girls who are not in school due to lack of menstrual kits; we will visit their homes and donate sanitary towels and ensure they report back to school. Also, there are some girls who have not been going to school for some time and there is high possibility of them getting married; We will talk to them about the benefits of quality education and challenges to face in early marriages our focus being to have them back in school.

How will you collaborate with others?

The school headteachers will provide us with the records of girls who stopped going to school. The Gatundu market women will help in visiting the girls at home and offering advice. We will also be in collaboration with girls who were married off at an early age to talk to these girls of the challenges they face in their lives.

How will you know you are moving in the right direction? (What are specific ways you can measure your impact?)

We will work closely with teachers and compare past records of school attendance of girls in menstruating age with those during and after project. We will also get report from Gatundu Market women(mothers) of the families view about girl child education and marriage. We will also work with church leaders to help us educate parents on importance of quality education, menstruation, sexual and reproductive health education for them to allow their girls attend Saturday sessions.

Key Steps

  • Visit the girls not attending school at home.
  • Talk to them to join the others and continue their education.
  • Provide sanitary towels to girls both at home and school.
  • Make all aware of free menstruation, sexual and reproductive health education at Gatundu safe space every Saturday.
  • We will have the announcements in churches to ensure parents allow their girls attend.
  • Have open forums after every 3 Saturdays to have the girls talk about the project impact in their lives.

leaders meeting

Esther N. 25 March 2019 9:42 We had a 1 hour session with the lead team on Saturday. Our main agenda being the education which offially starts coming Saturday. We have everything in order for successful launching. Watch these space for wonderful news on Saturday.

Hygiene Education Event

Esther N. 7 April 2019 9:17 We carried out hygiene education led by Sister Caroline, a nurse in Gatundu hospital. Schools have closed and we have more girls than we anticipated. We also had high school girls who made it very lively with the discussions. They had their comments and ideas which we had not included in our program.
The education happened on Friday and completed on Saturday. We took into consideration the girls idea of including boys in the program especially the hygiene. They say they have brothers at home who never shower for they believe that is for girls only. Also, a saying in our country' Mwanaume ni jasho' (a man is defined by his sweaty smell) is encouraging the boys to ignore hygiene. Watch this space for more exciting videos and photos.

Menstruation Education event

Esther N. 26 April 2019 7:35 Greetings,

-Diet to observe during Menstruation period

We had a question session where sister Carol. I and some women answered the girls. We will continue this session coming Saturday as we still have to cover complications during menstruation and how to overcome them.
