Githurai Peace initiative

A Peacemaking Project by Moses N.

What is the injustice we are solving?

I want to stop violence in my community. Forms of violence most prevalent here are tribal based violence, crime related violence, Child Abuse, bullying in schools and gender based violence.

Our Compassionate Solution:

To solve this injustice of Violence
we will address Lack of education and information on violence prevention and peacemaking
by Organising a soccer tournament which will be used to pass the information on violence prevention and peacemaking

Our Project Plan:

  • To stop violence
  • Our smart goal is to organize a soccer tournament that will be used to pass information about violence prevention and peacemaking making to 40 kids and the community by 7th July 2019,

We will increase my / our compassion by...

Approaching and collaborating with other like minded organisations and individuals.

How will you show courage?

By standing up to violent people and being a mediator in solving their conflict.

How will you collaborate with others?

Through Sports partnerships and reaching out to the community and local stakeholders. For example we will collaborate with realwood foundation primary school and the local Member of county Assembly ,Hon.Margret Wanjira Mwago.

How will you know you are moving in the right direction? (What are specific ways you can measure your impact?)

When the community will join in the fight against violence. When the community leaders will start playing a role in conflict resolution. When kids will start mediating among themselves while playing soccer

Key Steps

  • Educate kids on mediation. Educate kids on violence prevention. Educate the kids on their Human Rights. Enforcing a child protection policy in my organisation.

How did the project deepen your team's understanding of the injustice?

We realize that in order to stop all forms of violence and create a peaceful community education on peacemaking, violence prevention and mediation is key.

How did your community change as a result of your project?

Major stakeholders in the community like political and civil leaders joined in the fight against violence thus creating a more peaceful society.

How many people were impacted by your project?

Explain how you came up with the number of people impacted by the project?

we had 8 teams participating in the tournament each team consisting of 10 players, giving a total of 80,then we had 10 civic and political leaders, and 10 volunteers.

How did your team learn more about the people affected by the injustice?

Through engaging with them on a one on one talk and also through collaborating with people who have more knowledge on peacemaking.

What did your team learn?

We learnt that in order to stop violence the community needs peace education . We learnt that not everyone likes education thus, educating the community through sports is an added advantage. We learnt that we need to collaborate with other like minded individuals and groups for it to be easier to achieve our objectives

What challenges did your team overcome?

At first it was difficult to mobilise the community but we learnt that sports is a powerful for mobilising and creating peace and harmony in the community.

How have you involved others in designing, carrying out, or expanding this project?

We recruited volunteers from the community thus the community feels ownership of the project. We delegate various duties to various individuals thus empowering them to perform bigger roles in future. The youths were interwied and their views taken into consideration from the design to the launching of the project. The community saw the need to reach out to more people thus the idea of expanding the project.

What advice would you give to someone starting a peacemaking project?

In order to start a peacemaking project one needs to be courageous enough, speak up against violence, reach out and talk to more people in the community and collaborate with like minded individuals and organisations.
