Global Youth Mentorship Initiative

A Peacemaking Project by Shermin L.

What is the injustice we are solving?

Educational inequity is profoundly exhibited across societies and particularly in China rural schools. Education--particularly one that fosters innovative ideas—is essential for preparing for their futures. However, the parochial education offered in these schools, the dearth of resources and finances these institutions grapple with inadequately prepares students and puts them at great disadvantages. Particularly concerning is the lack of focus on developing skills related to leadership, creativity and teamwork and the exorbitant emphasis on rote learning. The lack of a holistic education has proven to produce drastic consequences, including the perpetuation of large socioeconomic gaps and poorer health longterm.

Thanks for sharing your project with Peace First community, Shermin!

I have noticed that you are interested in Education in general, but you have highlighted the issue of inequality in education and the quality of education provided in China.

It would be great if you can spend some time exploring the root causes of the issue! We would encourage everyone who is at this stage of their project to work towards deepening their understanding of the injustice they're focusing on. Thus, it would be great to use the problem and solution tree to discover the root causes and consequences of your chosen injustice, which will guide you to more solutions. Here are some resources on how to do that:

Also, make sure to write your compassionate insight and make it as clear as you can, so that other Peace First members would understand it better! You can use the compassionate tool here:

You would need to get started now to be eligible for a mini-grant. Thanks again for sharing your project with Peace First members, and we are looking forward to your next steps of the project!

Please let us know if you need any help with this!
