What is the injustice we are solving?

Sugar Water is a theatre/ social action project that plans to tackle two injustices. The first of these injustices is about the decline of the Bees. Through the project we will hopefully be raising awareness as to why the bee population is in steep decline. We aim to explore ways in which we may help protect and preserve the Bees natural habitats. Secondly, will be the injustice in Civil Engagement, in our local community there is a intergenerational divide. Sugar Water aims to bring together and connect two sides in our community and get them to begin interacting through the arts.

Our Compassionate Solution:

To solve this injustice of Intergenerational divide with in my community and informing people on how to save th Bees
we will address The lack of interaction and community cohesion between the 11-25 and the over 60
by Devising a show is an intermate process, that involves learning from each other and sharing life experiences. Going through this process would create lasting friendships that would strengthen ties in the community. Also teach people how to protect bees.

Goals

  • To create a friendly more cohesive community. between the 11-25 and the 60+
  • inform the community about the importance of the Bees and what they can doto protect them.

We will increase my / our compassion by...

By gathering a variety of people from these age groups and bringing them together to complete a common goal. We have chosen a theatre project because it requires all the skills that they will need to continue there friendships in the community. During the devising process the two parties will have to talk and listen to each other. On this journey we will learn about why the two parties don't talk, why they afraid of each other and what we can do to solve this problem. By the end of the project we will gain a better understanding of the community and have a safer more welcoming society. We have been doing research into the issues surrounding the Bees and have a great deal of understanding. Along the project we will be inviting speakers and Bee/wildlife charities to talk to us in more depth.

How will you show courage?

During the process will confront any challenges that may arise. These could be artistic conflicts or social conflicts. By confronting them in a safe space together we can stamp out stigmas that are on both sides of the spectrum. "old people are posh and boring" or "young people have no respect and don't care about anything". We as an intergenerational group we challenge these ideas and champion a new philosophy.

How will you collaborate with others?

Daventry has a variety of different institutions we are looking to work with that demonstrate the broadness of the project. Daventry youth forum, Daventry over 50s forum, youth clubs schools an churches. By talking and linking in with these places we hope to gain two things. 1 a divers range of attendees to the project and 2 more opinions on the core subject matters. We are hoping that after the devising process is complete these institutions may want the show to perform at there. widening the reach of the projects message. We will be seeking expert opinions and workshops from variety of sources. Theatre makers, lighting technicians and play writes to aid in the creative learning and Beekeepers Bee/wildlife charity speakers.

How will you know you are moving in the right direction? (What are specific ways you can measure your impact?)

If there is a performance with an intergenerational cast which is about saving the Bees. We have been successful. Also if we have learned from one another and there are lasting friendships afterwards. The staff of Youth Lab CIC will be there the whole way through the process. All of who are professionals in the creative field or the community sector. They shall keep logs and make sure targets are being met. This should ensure we are moving in the right direction.

  • Approuch key institunions, i.e. schools, churches, youthclubs. Ask if they wish to join the project.
  • 2 Create detailed time table for the project
  • 3 Approuch venue for project
  • 4 Create marketing for the project, flyers, posters, social media and promote to the community
  • 5 Arrange first meet and greet
  • 6 Run the devising process
  • 7 Perform the show
  • 8 Get feed back from particpants and audinece members

Hi Leto! My name is Fish and I'm on the Peace First team. I'm here to give you some feedback on your Compassionate Insight!

You've taken on a challenge -- trying to create a project that works on two issues simultaneously (a divide between the young and old in your community, and the decline in bee populations). I have to say your solution is unique and unifying!

I think your analysis of the root cause of the generational divide - lack of interaction and community cohesion - is strong. So is your solution - what better way to bring people together than have them create art collaboratively? My only question is how you'll bring people to the table to participate (especially if they are wary of interacting with other age groups and/or aren't aware of the importance of saving the bees).

You also imply (but don't state - consider revising to make this clearer) that the root cause of the decline in bee populations is a lack of awareness. Here, too, a community production makes sense -- the artists can become informed ambassadors, and they'll likely put together a message that is resonant to others!

I'm eager to see how this together - and let me know if you'd like to brainstorm strategies to recruit members.

Thanks so much for posting this project! I love the idea of combining civic engagement and education/advocacy around the declining bee population. This is such a creative idea, and can have a deep impact!

One thing that can help deepen the already-important work you're doing is to talk to people who directly experience the negative effects of bee decline, to the groups that cause bee decline to happen, and to other people who are working to stop bee decline. When you talk to all these groups, you'll gain a deeper understanding of why this is happening, and you'll get to learn from people who are directly affected by this to understand what their priorities and needs are. Understanding the root causes of bee decline will help you address it at the root.
