United by Technology

A Peacemaking Project by Klea M.

What is the injustice we are solving?

Technology can be the language of unity and diversity. A medium to be used without being stereotyped by the society. Using technology as a common language to fight gender inequality. The mentality that exist in Albania and in the MENA regions and South Asia has been always a barrier of diversity and integration in the field of technology. We need to share the voices of the ones who are now girls in Tech. Women who have fought with stereotypes are the example of the ones ‘who can’. We need to make sure the girls’s voice gets heard and they get the credit they deserve. By nurturing a collaborative environment and allow good ideas to surface. “IF WE DO NOT SHARE OUR STORIES AND SHINE A LIGHT ON INEQUITIES, THINGS WILL NOT CHANGE.”

Our Compassionate Solution:

To solve this injustice of -the negative stereotype towards girls! especially in the ICT fields gender based stereotypes discourage young girls in these regions.
we will address -the lack of shared stories of female role models. Mentality in girls and stereotypes in technology in developing regions, targeting an online audience of young girls.
by 'United by Technology' as a digital platform that shares the stories and interviews of young successful girls in technology from developing countries to create role models and share voices of women who told the society that yes we can.

Our Project Plan:

Goals

  • Create an online medium that promotes young girls in technology from Albania, Mena Region and South Asia, to show that girls can.
  • Empowering young girls and promoting their works through story telling
  • Sharing girls voices using technology as a tool to unite

We will increase my / our compassion by...

Creating a sharing community, that inspire and help young girls to build attitude and knowledge.

How will you show courage?

By sharing different stories that maybe are not that easy to be told, and encourage a community that strives to get help. Because we can. And I want to share the message that technology can unite us, by creating different profiles of young tech ambassadors.

How will you collaborate with others?

- I will work on the interviews with the girls from these regions. - I will work with them and create a long term collaboration so they can be part of the project - Promoting my project thought media engagement - trying to build small meeting groups with girls to share thoughts with the role models.

How will you know you are moving in the right direction? (What are specific ways you can measure your impact?)

While creating the online medium and having shared the first planned stories. For me working on technology that unites people its not only a passion but a voice that needs to be heard, a voice which is not silenced. For as long i will be giving life to a voice, I will celebrate a success.

Key Steps

  • Conducting the interviews
  • Building the online medium to share the stories
  • Sharing the stories
  • Marketing
  • Organizing mini talks at Bremen University how to work with girls in ICT thought informal education

I attended World Youth Forum ¬road to WYF in a nutshell

Klea M. 29 November 2018 9:43 Days of learning and sharing as a youth peacemaker, in a nutshell this is how I am going to describe my experience at WYF but for sure it was more than that.
For though sharing is caring, I got to know amazing stories that were the real echo of the whole forum. Through these stories I got connected with youth of especially MENA regions, to learn more about the culture and their projects.
WYF as a bridge of cultural exchange gave me the opportunity to talk more about my project United by Technology in which we are targeting young girls in technology from MENA regions, and to meet also young brilliant people.
All my focus was based on how youth can use technology for change on building peace and combating gender equality. Toward a more sustainable world there must stand a well-informed youth that can chase the progress and fight the hatred that cover the society today. I realized that I was sharing this mission with many of the participants, and that made us realize how much we should work together on small changes but powerful ones.
As I would find a slogan for the forum I would definitely go for ‘Nothing about us, Without us’. as when youth is involved things change for better.
This is a time where information is absorbed immediately, and overtime build-ed stereotypes are dividing people and are a source of hatred which should be destroyed. There is a need for us to come together and to immerse ourselves in the cultures that we don’t know. I found WYF the perfect place to break stereotypes, as a bridge to connect youth and bring them together for a common aim to promote peace, to get close to each other for though the space we share. It is important to promote peace, and to connect for though change will come. WYF a joining point where people from different countries can meet to work toward peace, and share amazing stories that need to be listen. If we don’t share our stories, how are we supposed to be listened?
I had the chance to be on my mission as an ambassador of Peace First, and to exchange many talks and stories with successful girls from these regions when I learned about their challenges to succeed in a society which gives more priority to men as social entrepreneurs. One of the project which I saw growing since one year ago, was of my friend Nada Ahmed. ‘The Four Biscuits’.
I met two amazing girls co-founder Nura Salem and Sherihane which I soon will update a story about their Social Enterprise. I always see that there is power in communities and young people who want to make a difference. For though myself I have seen the strength of working together against the mentality, and how empathy can change our lives.

The distance in Between, when diversity unites.

Klea M. 12 January 2019 20:46 Sharing the first stories, of the our first role models, talking and editing their stories, reflecting on the struggles that each has to undertake to make progress. During my meeting in Brussels, I had and Interview with Adela Alexandru, a young feminist woman, working with Gender and Minorities in Rumania, working on her own initiative Centrul FILIA.

Informal Discussion with great feedbacks

Klea M. 12 January 2019 20:51 During my meeting in Brussels, I had the opportunity to talk more about my project and take more feedbacks, on the need of empowering and integrating young girls especially from Mena regions who came as refugees in Europe. In a big picture investing on this young ladies, can change their mindset and working with their education, is the best process of integration. I had the change to talk with a representative of Sunium an social enterprise, that engages in training, research and facilitation of conflict resolution and negotiations activities.

The Four Biscuits Egypt, meeting young entrepreneurs

Klea M. 12 January 2019 20:54 I meet Nada in Spain in 2017, both we were sharing our dreams and our future projects, and I was so in love with her project, not only because I love biscuits, but from how much love and empathy she tells her story. After some months Nada brought into life to this amazing project The Four Biscuits, now an Egyptian initiative that empowers youth with Down syndrome through launching an online local market dedicated to catering delicious biscuits and cookies.

The delicious biscuits are cooked with such a love that you can sense it in the taste of the ingredients. The girls with an opportunity to meet while working and producing something with their hands.”

Meeting young change driven women entrepreneurs is such a joy to share.
Later this year during World Youth Forum, I had the opportunity to travel in Egypt, there I meet Nada’s colleagues. Two amazing girls that made my stay way much better and sweet.. The biscuits are a success and a happiness for which tries them.

Is always the passion and the mission who drives people to bring their soul to the community.
The Four Biscuits aims on spreading awareness about Down Syndrom, but also is shows us more the power of diversity, and collaboration.

Working more, on spreading more the word in Albania

Thanks for sharing your project with us, Klea! This is a very interesting idea to work on! The ICT plays a huge role in promoting gender equality; it provides the women and girls with social, economic, and cultural opportunities.

As part of the process of completing peacemaking projects, Peace First staff give formal feedback on important steps of the project.

I have noticed that you want to apply this project in Albania, MENA Region, and South Asia, which is really great! I am wondering if you got the chance to talk to girls from these areas besides your country? Where are you based?
It would be good if you could consider talking to parents or teachers or community leaders or the people who are trying to solve the same issue or/and people who are already working to solve this issue and try to understand their perspective.

Also, please make sure to spend some time working on your Compassionate Insight and here is the tool for that: https://www.peacefirst.org/understand-through-compassion

You can also use the problem and solution tree to discover the root causes and consequences of your chosen issue and it will guide you to more solutions. Here are some resources on how to do that: https://www.peacefirst.org/resource/understand-2-problem-and-solution-trees

I have noticed that you applied for a mini-grant, which is really great! At this moment, I would encourage you to work on the above feedback. Thanks again for sharing your project with Peace First members, and we are looking forward to your next steps of the project!

Please let us know how can we help.
