The Academy for Prevention of Human Trafficking and Other Related Matters (TAPHOM)

What is the injustice we are solving?
Incidences of human trafficking in Nigeria are increasing, with many cases going unreported. Most of the trafficked victims are children, vulnerable women and girls usually deceived into conditions of suffering. According 2016 global slavery index, there are 875 500 victims of human trafficking in Nigeria. According to United Nations, Nigeria is a source, transit and destination country of young people who are trafficked. Human traffickers or perpetrators often see young people, especially women, girls and children as commodities that can generate 100 times of the amount spent on recruiting them.

There are daily incidences of trafficking in Nigeria- 26 Nigerian girls die at Mediterranean sea, and hundreds of young Nigerians die in desert, and others are killed in Libya Black Slavery Market.

Over 80 percent of victims are young people, and millions are at risk of human trafficking in Nigeria.

There is much work to do to combat human trafficking, but not much is done. There is urgent need to create preventive measures to address this problem and its root causes. It is based on this that we initiated The Academy for Prevention of Human Trafficking and Other Related Matters (TAPHOM).

TAPHOM is a 21st century initiative that will integrate ICT tools, training, advocacy, and research in combating and preventing human trafficking and other related human rights abuses. Through this project, we will develop a Mobile Application that can be used to monitor, track and report suspected cases of human trafficking and other forms of abuses. This will the first of its kind in Nigeria.

I and my team have been at the forefront of combating human trafficking in Nigeria, empowered over a thousand young people to take strategic actions against modern slavery, gender inequality, etc.

Hello Joseph, I noticed that The Academy for Prevention of Human Trafficking and Other Related Matters (TAPHOM) accomplished a lot through the 2015/2016 pilot project. Well done!
How do you make sure that the young people are taking a leading part of this project? Or how might we involve the young people in Nigeria to lead and/or cascade the project? Please let us know how can we help.
