Child abuse shouldn't be a part of growing up.

What is the injustice we are solving?
I am a victim of child abuse and don't want what happened to me to happen to other children.

Hey Elijah -- how's this project going? How can we help?

I think there are various reasons it happens. It could be the lack of parenting education of parents, the unwanted birth because of some reasons like the mother having birth at too young age that makes her still less mature to have a child, or birth as a result of a marriage by accident, or a birth of baby without "father", etc. And yes, it could be what Laeyunna said.

Hi Rosalinda! Thanks for your comment--I can tell you are committed to healthy families and parents who have enough support. Parenting education can help address some causes of child abuse for sure! You may not know this, but child abuse happens at similar rates across different parts of society. Regardless of marriage status, being a single parent or having multiple parents, and no matter what the parents' age or a/gender, child abuse spans all of these different identities.

Sometimes it can seem like people who are young or single parents may be more likely to be abusive, even though this isn't the reality. This is because many societies already think of young or single parents as less capable, and stigmatize them more often. (And often, these parents are under more scrutiny and more likely to be discovered when they are abusive.)

But in reality, the stigma is often the main issue, and as a whole group, marginalized parents are just as capable of good parenting than parents who are in more socially accepted situations. Here are two great projects and reports about teen parenting that helps unpack the idea of stigma and the problems young parents face: http://www.noteenshame.com https://youngwomenunited.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/ywu-dismantlingtpp-may2016-digital.pdf

This is a huge topic with a lot of complicated causes--and solutions. I'm excited you're engaging with it! It's very important. Let me know if you have any questions!
