Questions about the mini grants

Hello my name is Te'a Gray and I am currently a senior at Hill Regional Career High School. Me and my teammate, Patricia Cooke, had created a business called BLAST. We want to get our community involved with also reducing violence through planning community events. However, it's been very hard to start up the business. I was wondering if you had any opportunities where we can make our idea into an actual business?
Thank you.

Hi Te'a,

I’m excited you are taking on such an important issue of reducing violence in your community. It sounds like you have some great ideas about how to promote community relationships and healing! In order to give you some more specific advice, I would love to hear more about the story of BLAST and how you and Patricia came up with the idea. What kinds of violence do you want to address? What do you hope the community events will look like? What kinds of actions have you taken already?

The next step we have our Peace First participants take is filling out a statement we call a “compassionate insight” which defines your project including the injustice at the center of it and how you want to tackle it. You should be able to do this through your project dashboard, but let me know if you can’t find the feature. We have a series of tools that can help you build and move through your project. They can be found at: https://www.peacefirst.org/peacemaking-tools. I encourage you to take a look at the “Understand” tools (https://www.peacefirst.org/understand-through-compassion) to help you complete your compassionate insight.

Eventually, after you have completed the “Understand” and “Plan” stages, a great way to get your business/project off its feet is by applying for one of our $250 mini-grants. If your grant is approved, you can use this as an initial fund to help start up your project. As you go through this process, we would love to continue providing you with feedback in order to help your project grow and make an impact. Let me know if you have any questions!

Te'a, just wanted to add that it is good to see you here. Clare has some great ideas for how you can get things started. Let me know if I can help brainstorm some other solutions. You shared a lot of great ideas with me in March - I think the next step is to pick one or two to try this summer, and we can get you the resources to get started.
