Interview with New Peace First Board Member Jasmine Babers

Jasmine Babers, founder of Love Girls Magazine and 2014 Peace First Fellow, joined the Peace First Board! To celebrate, we had 2015 Peace First Fellow Brennan Lewis ask Jasmine some questions. Check it out!

What inspired you to found Love, Girls Magazine?

The girls in my community! High School is such a trying time, It was important for us to have a place where we could express ourselves and use our voices, and it was also important to have a place where we could be creative and have fun, but at the same time we wanted to have impact and be able to cultivate real change. The Magazine has been an anchor to girls dreams. It's taught us skills and helped us develop career paths. Its shaped us as women, citizens, and peacemakers. it has gone above and beyond what I could have ever imagined on my own.

Who is your greatest role model?

It's impossible to choose just one. So here's my top 10 (in no specific order).

  1. Teresa Babers (my mama)
  2. Zora Neal Hurston
  3. Ida B. Wells-Barnett
  4. Oprah Winfrey
  5. Michelle Obama
  6. Audre Lorde
  7. Coretta Scott King
  8. Shirley Chisholm
  9. Beyonce Knowles Carter
  10. Alice Walker

All phenomenal women in their own respects and my greatest role models.

Which album have you listened to the most this year?

THE CARTERS. Becuase it's Beyonce. Nothing is better than Beyonce.

What's your superpower?

Does applying false lashes count?

Favorite Girl Scout cookie?

My first job ever was Outreach Coordinator at the Girl Scouts and we got TONS of free cookies! So, I could probably live the rest of my life without eating another girl scout cookie and be okay, but If I had to pick, I'd say thin mints (with milk). A classic.

What's your take on pineapple pizza?

"pineapple" and "pizza" shouldn't be in the same sentence together, let alone the same dish!
