My Story as a Peacemaker: Grace Callwood
Hi, my name is Grace, I am 11 years old and I am from Maryland. When I go swimming, I usually like to swim with my friends and we usually like do hand stands, just swimming, floating on our backs and flips underwater. I love to read. I love chapter books.
When I was seven years old, I was diagnosed with Cancer. And so we had heard about a family who had two little girls and that they lost their home in the fire, so they were homeless. And so, I donated my back-to-school clothes to them because I couldn’t go to school anyway.
From my experience of being sick and having cancer, it really helped me have a connection with the people that I was helping, especially, sick kids; but with homeless sick and foster children because at first I never heard what cancer was or what it meant. And so, I was trying to figure out what I did to deserve having cancer but, then I realized that I didn’t do anything that happens to a lot of people. So, I want to share that message of it’s not their fault that they were in this situation.
When I started to create We Cancerve, the process was finding out what, who want to help? I learned to think very hard and I learned to be very careful with the decisions that I made, because it was something that We Cancerve is something that I really cared about.
It makes me feel amazing, when I get to make another person smile even making my friends laugh, I love telling jokes, making people laugh. And so, it's that much, it’s like ten times better doing it for homeless sick or foster children.
