Recently, Heineken came out with a video called “Worlds Apart” that encourages actual dialogue in the deeply divided world we live in. The company set up an experiment that paired strangers with completely opposite views on the environment, transgender rights, and feminism. Heineken posed the question: “Can two strangers with opposing views prove that there’s more that unites than divides us? #OpenYourWorld.” Since the election of President Trump and Brexit in the U.K., we’ve seen a huge division and disconnect between the left and the right.
“People with opposite views believe in their own opinions so vehemently, they’re convinced everyone on the other side is practically from a different species.” ~ Joe Berkowitz
The experiment brings together the climate change denier and the environmentalist, a transphobic man and a transgender woman, with neither party aware of the other’s views. These unlikely pairs get the rare opportunity to meet and work with someone they normally wouldn’t interact with in everyday life. The pairs are tasked with building furniture together in a series of icebreakers and hands-on activities that allow them to get to know each other. In the end, it’s amazing to see the relationship they’ve built and the respect they still have for each other after learning of their differences.
This creative ad has received a lot of praise from the public, the media, and even a few celebrities. Be sure to watch it all the way through and see for yourself!

How can we as peacemakers start a dialogue to unite our communities? How can we increase understanding and acceptance of important issues like gender and LGBTQ rights?
